Alsace
Alsace is a region in the northeastern section of France, close to the German border, because of its proximity to Germany Alsacian wines have many German influences. These wines are typically white. Alcase is one of the only French areas to name their wines after the grape used and not the region, for example Gewurztraminer or
Riesling, instead of bourdeaux.
Alsace wines are ones often found in German wineries - Gewurztraminer, Muscat,
Riesling, Pinot Gris, and
Chardonnay. The soil and the environment create a spicy wine, so Gewurztraimner from Alsace tends to be highly aromatic and have spiceier notes.
Alsace produces some fine "Vendange Tardive," or late harvest wines more concentrated and hence sweeter wines. The two main areas of Alsace are Bas Rhin, to the north, and Haut Rhin, to the south.
