BBQs (barbecue) and Wine

For me Winter or Summer is time for BBQ one season is a little bit more accommodating (less cold :) ) But the lure of good BBQ forces me to brave the cold and snow ..

  1. Red: When selecting Red wines for BBQ think big, bold and well balanced wines that can stand on there own.. They should be full bodied full flavored smooth, wines with good acidity. Wines for red meat BBQ should be able to support and enhance the sensuous mouth watering flavors of the BBQ. It has to be strong enough to with stand the bold flavors of BBQ which tend to be strong, tart, spicy and sweet. So this really rules out nuanced wines as the strong flavors will over power them.

  2. White: When selecting White wines for BBQ white wines will work as well, especially with Seafood/Shell Fish, Pork and Chicken. Look for fruity whites with acidity to cut through the rich and sometimes fatty flavors of BBQ. The crisp, bright, flinty flavors will cut through the rich, tongue coating qualities of BBQ.

  3. Bubbles: Champagne Sparkling Wines Practically any sparkler from Canada (Ontario) California, Spain or Italy will be great with BBQ the bubbles scrub your palate. Blush sparkling wines are especially good with BBQ. Cava from Freixenet is good as well ..

So how do you choose a good BBQ wine accompaniment for those succulent ribs and thick steaks ...

  1. For Red Meat for those succulent ribs and thick steaks Big and Bold wines like Baco Noir, Shiraz, Rioja, Red Zinfandel, a good Cabernet Petite Sirah

  2. For White Meat chicken pork etc. try a Chablis or a Chardonnay

  3. For all of the above :) nice sparkling wine or Champagne with a BBQ works quite similar to a beer but ads a nice elegant twist.

PS. On a hot summer day don't leave the wine out on the table as the heat will ruin its flavor profile. So take it from me whatever the temperature hit the wine store find something you like and fire up that grill. Enjoy !!!
